Resilience and Leadership
A while ago, I was introduced to two remarkable people through Ian Hutchinson, a rather well-known Specialist Orthodontist, friend and also a pretty incredible guy, who has made the news through his ordeal with an ex-patient. Hutch had spoken to me about how the ordeal affected him and how he has managed to positively move on and live with the events. He found help and support through Paddy Vee and Collin Mclaughlin who are ex-military and the founders of The Optimum Performance Partnership.
They support and mentor a huge range of people from professional sportsmen and women to businesses leaders and managers, changing mindsets and helping them to take control of their environments and emotions, and become amazing leaders. They draw upon their vast experience, having served in difficult, and often scary, situations, and this translates to any industry, business, or team.
Enlisting on a course with The Optimum Performance Partnership has been a game changer for me. During Covid, so many of us have needed to draw upon reserves of resilience, had to navigate through unknown territories and lead our teams in ways we have never experienced.
They have taught me what it means to be a leader, how to manage conflict, how to control the controllable, the power of self-belief and worth, and how we can empower those around us too. If you told me a while ago that I would be coached by two former Special Forces guys and use their skills to be a better manager and leader, I would have laughed, and panicked at the thought that I was going to be shouted at or put through some punishing physical assault course.
Learning from the best is easy when you take the time to understand your thought processes and those of your teams. Over the next year, we hope to reach out to others in the Dental world and show the parallels shared with the military.
It has truly been the best experience and training I have ever been on in my 24 years as a Practice Manager. Practice Management Survival is real and can be achieved, even in the most difficult and hostile situations.
